Objective: The current study aimed to report the efficacy and safety of harmonic scalpel for laparoscopic renal cyst decortication Design: Retrospective study Setting: Department of Urology, Hitit University, Corum Training and Research Hospital, Turkey Subjects: Thirty four patients with renal cyst Intervention: Laparoscopic decortication Main outcome measures: The symptoms at presentation and recurrence were recorded Results: Thirty-five patients (21 males and 14 females) were included in the study. The patients’ ages were between 30 and 77 years with a mean of 57.51 ± 11.65 years. The cysts’ size was between 45 and 105 mm with a mean of 75.62 ± 18.07 mm. Retroperitoneal approach was performed in three patients. The mean follow up period was 13.94 ± 9.7 months. Bleeding occurred in one patient in the post-operative period. One patient had a history of percutaneous cyst aspiration before. Pathological examination revealed benign results in all patients. Three patients had recurrence in radiological imaging studies without symptom in follow-up period. Surgical success was defined as no recurrence of the renal cyst and a decrease or disappearance of the pain after the operation, which was achieved in 90.62% of the patients. Conclusion: Harmonic scalpel is an effective and safe method for decortication of a renal cyst with a high success rate. © The Kuwait Medical Journal. All rights reserved.
