TOWARDS THE FUNCTIONS OF +lX AND ITS EXPANDED USAGE ON SOME ADJECTIVES

Turkish provides significant data to typological linguistic studies when compared to other languages because of its dominant agglutinative quality. There are various suffixes in Turkish which retain their productivity beginning from the first attested documents under derivational and inflectional categories, as well as other suffixes copied into or copied from Turkish. Among the wide suffix stock, lX is one of the most productive and operational suffix which mostly attaches to nouns and principally generates temporary adjectives as well as permanent nouns in Turkish and other Turkic variants. The suffix +lX diversifies the semantics of root or stem attached to via various semantic ties and contents. With this aspect, it is amongst the most used and preferred suffixes to enrich the vocabulary and to name new concepts. In as much as, there are hundreds of different words coded in both written and mental lexicon in Turkish produced with this suffix, in relation with various semantic properties like possession, ownership, belonging, denotation of places names etc. In the present study, its attachment to adjectives like korkunc 'scary', komik 'funny', asil 'noble', super 'super' which brings out new adjectives besides nouns, that are not attested before, will be evaluated and by this means, expansion on the function of producing adjectives from adjectives of the suffix will be put forward.
