Having gained the ahd-name or capitulations from the Ottomans, the European nations set up their embassy in Istanbul and their consulates organizing the commercial activities in the Ottoman Empire. This study examines the British consuls in Cyprus, whether the British consulate in Cyprus was sub-ordinate of Aleppo consulate or not, the vice-consulate missions of the British consuls in Cyprus for other European states, the sources of their incomes, their security problems and the drogoman, their servants, brokers and merchants who are acting under the British protection in Cyprus throughout the 18th century. In addition to this, it will be examined the transformation of the consuls' duties during the period under question. In this study it will be focused on the collections of the Ottoman documents and registers and stressed on the importance of the Ottoman archival documents for these kind of researches, in that the Ottoman Empire governed Levant and Near East.Öğe The Sheep Tax in the Cyprus Island (1570-1603)(Turk Tarih Kurumu, 2019) Demiryurek, MehmetThe sheep Tax (adet-i-agnam or resm-i ganem) in the Ottoman Empire was collected in April or May generally. The quantity of the tax could change according to the time and place. Having conquered Cyprus, the Ottomans also collected above mentioned tax in Cyprus. It was one of the income sources of the Cyprus budget under the Ottoman rule. It is understood that there are some original sources germane to the sheep tax of Cyprus. One of them is the Cyprus budgets under the Ottoman rule and the other is the 1 Numarah Kibns Mukataa Defteri. It has not been made a comprehensive research concerning the sheep tax in Cyprus yet, using these documents. Therefore, the aim of this study is to reveal the historical documents related to the sheep tax in Cyprus in the late years of the 16th century and evaluated them. The evidence used in this study is derived principally the records of the Nicosia Kadi's court and from the Cyprus budgets in the Ottoman prime Ministry archives in Istanbul.Öğe The Tax Farm for the Salt-Works and Port Customs of Ottoman Cyprus (1570-95)(Brill Academic Publishers, 2019) Demiryurek, MehmetFocusing on the revenue and expenditure records of the treasury of Ottoman Cyprus during the last decades of the sixteenth century, this article examines the tax farm of the salt-works and port customs created by the Ottomans during the first quarter century of their rule on the island. In doing so it seeks to underline the importance of the Cyprus budget records (ruznamce) for understanding the financial system that the Ottomans introduced to the island and to determine the revenue derived from these tax farms.Öğe The Trustees Of The Hala Sultan Foundation In Cyprus In 18th And 19th Centuries(Hale Sivgin, 2019) Demiryurek, MehmetUmm Haram bint-i Milhan el-Ensariyye, who was the wet nurse of the Prophet Muhammed, died in Cyprus during the first expedition of the Muslims in AD 649. The place which had her grave had been built a tomb later, which it is in Larnaca in Cyprus and it is called by the Turkish Cypriots as Hala Sultan Tekke. Although the place and date of the construction of the shrine is not exactly known, having conquered Cyprus the Ottomans did specially make a point of the tomb and a lot of revenue sources were dedicated by the founders of some foundations in Cyprus from 1601 onwards. Even though some revenue sources were allocated by the some vaqf founders in Cyprus from 1601 onwards, Vaqf of Hala Sultan Tekke and its trustees appeared as an institution in the first half of the 18th century. The main duty of the trustee was to protect and increase the revenue sources of the foundation. The aim of the study is to reveal the trustees of the Tekke, to evaluate their activities and to contribute to the history of Cyprus.
