Lumbar puncture (LP) is a medical procedure that places a high psychological burden on both children and their parents. Parents perceive this medical procedure as threatening and uncertain, which affects their anxiety and stress levels and can lead to parental depression. This situation directly affects both the child's compliance with the procedure and the overall quality of healthcare. Nursing support has a positive effect during this process, in which parents experience psychological distress. Therefore, pediatric nurses should identify parents' levels of depression, stress, and anxiety and provide them with information. This study aimed to determine the levels of depression, anxiety, and stress in parents before the first LP procedure was performed on children hospitalized with a preliminary diagnosis of meningitis. This descriptive study was conducted between January and May 2025 in the Pediatric Infectious Diseases, Pediatric Neurology, and Neonatal Units of Ankara Etlik City Hospital. It involved 217 parents of children aged 3–12 years who were scheduled to undergo LP and met the sampling criteria and agreed to participate in the study. Data were collected using the Child and Parent Diagnostic Form and the Depression-Anxiety-Stress Scale (DASS-21) developed by the researcher. The obtained data were analyzed using the SPSS 22.0 program. Descriptive statistics, t-tests for independent groups, analysis of variance, Pearson correlation analysis, and Cronbach's Alpha reliability coefficients were used in the analysis of the data. Of the 217 parents participating in the study, 77% were the child's mother, and the average age of the children was 7. In the study, parents scored 14.58±3.05 (range: 7-21) on the DASS-21 depression subscale, anxiety subscale of 14.55±3.28 (range: 7-20), and stress subscale of 14.45±3.40 (range: 6-20). According to the cut-off points of the scale, 64.1% of the participants had very severe depression, 92.2% had very severe anxiety, and 37.8% had severe stress. No significant relationship was found between the parents' degree of closeness to the child, education, employment, economic status, prior knowledge of the disease, place of residence variables, and depression, anxiety, and stress levels (p>0.05). It was determined that parents who learned about the disease from sources such as books, neighbors, or family elders had significantly higher levels of depression, anxiety, and stress compared to those who learned from the internet or a doctor (p<0.05). The study found that parents of children aged 3-12 who were scheduled to undergo LP procedures had high levels of depression, anxiety, and stress, regardless of their closeness, education, employment status, and other sociodemographic characteristics. The importance of where the diagnosis was made was also revealed. In light of these findings, it is recommended that pediatric nurses assess parents' levels of depression, anxiety, and stress prior to invasive procedures such as LP and provide structured information sessions for parents.
