These works have mainly been classified and examined under various headings such as performing music, dancing, insad, gender of the performer, musical instruments, and playing them. They are mainly discussed from a jurisprudential perspective, but they also appear as books by Sufis to convey certain specific areas. This situation is related to using the concept of sama' in two different terminological meanings. Among the books written since the early periods of Islam and dealing with the rules of music, the work written by al-Udfuwi (d. 748/1347), who lived during the Bahri Mamluk Period and was among the notable scholars of his time and who was a follower of the al-Shafi'i sect of thought, stands out in terms of its content and principles. Al-Udfuwi learned enough knowledge and wrote works to have a say in hadith, jurisprudence, literature, music, and history. During his time, he was one of the influential jurists of the al-Shafi'i sect of thought. This work, which we examine in this study and belongs to the sama' literature, which deals with the rules of music, is composed of an introduction, two chapters, subsequent sections, and conclusions, as he stated in the introduction. Al-Udfuwi deals with issues such as reading the Quran with melody, huda, inshad, singing, women and men singing, the evidence of those who give haram or m & uuml;bah rulings on this subject, singing with musical instruments, and the evidence of the Sufis, one by one, with the evidence of the Quran, sunnah, ijma, and analogy. While doing this, he tried to include all the opinions of the previous jurists who were in favor or against music. The evidence was taken from the works of commentators, hadith scholars, jurists, and writers who were experts in their fields and conveyed objectively and clearly. As we learn from the sources that he was also a musician, al-Udfuwi distinguished himself among other sama' type works by devoting the second part of his book entirely to musical instruments. He gives extensive space to both the definitions and the jurisprudential status of the def, sebbabe , ud, davul, zil, sun & umacr;c, kadib, and other percussion instruments that were available in his time. Many specific issues, such as buying and selling musical instruments, playing them, dancing to them, hiring musicians, teaching music, and accepting musicians' oaths, are discussed meticulously in the work. The first part of our study began with a general overview of art and music during the Mamluk period. Then, the life and works of al-Udfuwi, the identified copies of al-Imta' biahkam as-sama', the research conducted on this work, and the essential sources the author consulted in his work, the principles of writing the work, and the introduction and content of the work were included. In addition, after quoting examples of the rulings al-Udfuwi made against the issues he encountered, his perspective on the art of music was also mentioned, and the article was concluded. Historical musicology, document analysis, and biography techniques were used in these studies. In line with the author's views, some interpretations of current jurisprudential rulings are also included. This work deals with rational and traditional evidence in a rich spectrum and is among the most comprehensive studies in its field. The issues of music discussed in this book are issues that have been controversial among scholars in the past centuries and today. Many different views have emerged and been adopted on this subject. Indeed, alUdfuwi has created his work by judging the topics he has conveyed with his evidence under the relevant headings. Al-Udfuwi gives favorable permissions for all the discussions on the art of music that he included in his book, among all these controversial issues in his time, and conveys them in a multifaceted way with all their evidence. Al-Udfuwi's work called al-Imta` bi-ahkam as-sama` was first examined in 2019 by Ganti b. Wisam Duguz and this work was introduced to the scientific world in its entirety. On this occasion, it is important that this work, which has not yet been researched in Turkey, is introduced and examined for the first time. However, when there were scholars who mostly expressed negative opinions about music, the study of this book, in which an essential jurist from the Mamluk period expressed his positive views, will also shed light on Islamic laws literature studies.enTurkish Religious MusicAl-UdfuwiSama'Musical-Imta' bi-Ahkam asSama'Al-Udfuwi's Unique and Holistic Approach to Musical Issues in the Context of al-Imta' bi-Ahkami as-Sama'Article25110.33415/daad.1589061WOS:001485171000004
